What began as a fun way to work with her friends has exploded into a comedy brand of its own. When Carole Montgomery (a stand up comedy veteran of over 40 years) started in the business, you would never see two female comics on the same show. Fast forward to today’s comedy scene and nothing has changed, even though there are way more women in comedy. This performance of Funny Women of a Certain Age will be presented by Carole Montgomery, Maureen Langan and Vanessa Hollingshead.
WOACA was created to give older women comics a chance to be seen and be heard. Frustrated by how women are portrayed in show business once they hit the age of 50, Carole decided to do something about it. It was only a few years ago that she had the idea to create a show that would travel to different cities and showcase a rotating cast of older female comedians. In no time at all, Carole’s idea become a Showtime special that made history and broke ratings records. It was Showtime’s highest rated premiere of a stand up show in 2019! Two more specials followed and a national tour is now being planned.
The women who appear in WOACA are all brilliant, funny, and vibrant – and it just so happens that they are all of a certain age. These are the women who paved the way – blazed the trail - for the female comedians you see performing today.
“If I had to choose between ageism or sexism, I’d take a pat on the ass any
day, since that meant someone noticed me.”
~Carole Montgomery - Creator of Funny Women of A Certain Age
With over 2 dozen television credits to her name, Carole Montgomery is a respected veteran of the standup comedy scene nationwide. In addition to her numerous television appearances, Carole has headlined clubs & colleges across the USA and starred in 2 different Las Vegas production shows. In her ten years as a LAS VEGAS STAR, it is estimated that she has been seen by over 5 million audience members. Carole is also an accomplished director & producer. She directed Jim Florentine’s solo show I’m Your Savior currently airing on Amazon Prime. She is currently developing a new solo show with activist and comedian Kaytlin Bailey called Whore’s Eye View. Carole was also a featured performer at the MONTREAL JUST FOR LAUGHS, BOSTON & NY COMEDY FESTIVALS.
Standup comedian Maureen Langan is featured on this season of America’s Got Talent, where she received a standing ovation and four yeses from the judges: Howie, Heidi, Sofia and Simon. In additional to America’s Got Talent, her television appearances include Gotham Live, Comics Unleashed and HBO. She has performed on Broadway with Rosie O’Donnell and has shared the stage with Robin Williams, Paula Poundstone, Steven Wright and Gladys Knight. Maureen performs at comedy clubs, theaters and festivals across the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Balkans and South Africa. Her worldwide travels are the inspiration for her television pilot MoGoes (aka Langan on the Loose), where she highlights the fun, heart and smart of a city and its people.
Vanessa Hollingshead is the straight daughter of two drug-addicted, alcoholic, hippy parents. In fact, her dad is the man who gave Timothy Leary his very first hit of LSD. Closer to Leary than he was to her, he'd say things like, "The three most important people in my life are 'me,' 'myself,' and 'I' -- setting the scene for some serious low self-esteem issues. But like the phoenix from the flames, Vanessa was able to rise up and turn all the wild characters from her life into comedy gold. A comic, natural story teller and accomplished actor, Vanessa has a unique repertoire of heart-felt, funny characterizations of all the people that cross her path, daily. Constantly writing new and original material, Vanessa is able to transcend a variety of audiences and always leaves them wanting more.
Having just taped her Showtime Special, Funny Women of a Certain Age, hosted by Fran Drescher, she also is on the critically acclaimed WTF Podcast hosted by Marc Maron. She's had a special on Comedy Central, performed for the troops in the Middle East, and opened for Bill Maher Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Jim Norton, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, amongst others.
